My ongoing PhD dissertation is about the Shanghai General Chamber of Commerce, an economic organization consisted of foreign merchants from various countries and commercial order in late 19th century. This organization was deeply interwovened with the global history since late 19th century of trade, industry, diplomacy, bureaucracy, laws etc. Therefore, my project is about the migration history, global trade history, maritime history, imperialism and international relationships from 19th to 20th century.

Research Interests

I focus on the global movement of foreign merchants in 19th and 20th century and the networks they built up for the flow of not only tangible commodity and people, but also intangible things like idea, culture and so on. I also pay attention to the conflicts and cooperation in state and non-state levels becasue of their movement.
