Mr Jonathan Dixon

PhD Candidate, History. University of Cambridge

Biography:

My name is Jonathan Dixon and I am a final year PhD student interested in ideas of early modern travel, knowledge and non-knowledge. I completed my undergraduate studies at Queen's University Belfast before pursuing postgraduate studies at the University of Cambridge, on a Newton Chess Scholarship. I am a member of the European Society for Renaissance Studies, the Ecclesiastical History Society and the Hakluyt Society, and have spoken at their annual conferences. Outside of academia, I enjoy Rugby Union.

Research Interests

I am interested in how classical and medieval ignorance and mythology surrounding the 'East', led Europeans to explore, colonise and ultimately migrate to Africa and Asia. Additionally, my research explores how the societies Europeans attempted to build in their colonies, closely mirrored those imagined within the pre-conceptional mythology of earlier eras.
