Biography:

Dr Mohammad Tarikul Islam is an Associate Professor of Government and Politics at Jahangirnagar University in Bangladesh. He holds a PhD on Disaster Risk Reduction and the Role of Bangladesh Government from Jahangirnagar University. His research undertaking intensely discovers the legal and institutional aspects of the government of Bangladesh in mainstreaming disaster risk reduction into development. Professor Islam had gained hands-on experiences while joining brief mission at UNDP country office in Indonesia, Nepal and China. Dr Islam was the Visiting Research Fellow in the Department of International Development at the University of Oxford, United Kingdom in 2018 where he had accomplished a research work on local government in dispute resolution. Prior to joining University in 2014, he was serving United Nations Development Programme for a period of seven years in different capacities. Local Government, Human Security, Refugees Studies, Disaster Management, Climate Diplomacy and Foreign Relations of Bangladesh with South Asia are the key areas of his research and teaching interests. Professor Islam has taught at Jadavpur University in Kolkata and Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu as guest lecturer for a while. Dr Islam is the regular contributor to the South Asia Blog of London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), UK and the Institute of South Asian Studies, National University of Singapore. His edited book ‘Human Security, Peace and Development: South Asian Perspective’ was published from Kolkata, India in July, 2018. He is also engaged with the Center for Climate Change Communication at George Mason University in USA as Affiliate Researcher. He has participated in number of lectures, seminars and workshops at Cambridge, LSE, SOAS and Oxford. Prof. Islam acts as Research Guide to different courses (SSC and ACAD) at Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre. His article regularly appears in the Daily Star, the Khabarhub English, the Daily Independent, the Financial Express, and the South Asia Monitor (leading English dailies of South Asia). Dr Islam has recently been offered to take up post-doc fellowship (visiting scholar) in August 2020 at the University of Cambridge. His forthcoming books are ‘Local Government in Bangladesh: Contemporary Issues and Challenges’ from the Routledge and ‘Disaster Risk Reduction in Bangladesh: Issues of Governance and Development’ from the Springer respectively.

Research Interests

I am currently researching to what extent climate change is responsible for the internal migration in the coastal areas of Bangladesh and plight of climate refugees. I also intend to research the influx of Rohingya Refugees in Bangladesh from Myanmar and issues of their Citizenship Rights, Human Security and Repatriation.
