Research

  • Borders in North Asia: cross border migration between China, Russia and Mongolia including caravan border trade,  Buddhist pilgrimage in historical and present day perspectives. 
  • Diaspora studies:  in particular Buryat migration to China and Mongolia  from Russia in the past and establishing co-ethnic transborder communities which straddle the border in the present; Chinese migration to Russia and Russian migration to China.  Revival of the 'Yellow peril' in the Russian Far East and Siberia and rise of the 'China phobia' in Mongolia in the light of the economic and infrastructural expansion of China in the region.
