The Centre for the Study of Global Human Movement is hosting, together with Rahela Trust, a diaspora conference: 

“What next for Afghan women? Education and empowerment under the Taliban”

Location: Magdalene College

This conference is led by Afghan women and provides a unique opportunity to engage with their insights. It is an academic conference focusing on strategies international allies and the Afghan diaspora can adopt to facilitate Afghan women’s education.

Objectives

With an aim to not lose another generation of intelligent female minds to the Taliban, the discussion will highlight the parameters for providing remote learning solutions, best-practice community-based education, barriers to effective international collaboration, and investment opportunities. This event seeks to consider how to strengthen the power of Afghan women to establish the political and social changes they wish to see in Afghanistan.

  • The challenges to accessing secondary and tertiary education faced by women and girls in Afghanistan
  • Community-based solutions to education for women and girls in Afghanistan
  • Remote solutions for education for women and girls in Afghanistan and for Afghan refugees
  • Exploring regional solutions in countries neighbouring Afghanistan and in the UK and Europe for girls' and women's education

  • What international funding without discrimination means
  • Mechanisms for effective collaboration with Afghan diaspora groups in the UK and in the EU
  • Developing information hubs on education for Afghan refugees and asylum seekers

Confirmed speakers include Afghan women's rights activist and Founder of Rahela Trust, Rahela Sidiqi, Shukria Barakzai former MP of Afghanistan, Belquise Ahmadi and Afghan politician and women's rights activist, Fawzia Koofi.
