In April and May 2025, the Afghanistan Desk at The Centre for the Study of Global Human Movement, University of Cambridge, and the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute (the IBAHRI) organised a series of trainings for Afghan women and Afghan-focused organisations in the documentation of human rights violations and engaging international mechanisms.
This session focuses on engaging the ICC and UN mechanisms - training Afghan women how to collect and submit evidence to international bodies (ICC, UN, CEDAW, Special Rapporteurs), will hear from lawyers working on Afghanistan-related cases before the ICC, UN Special Rapporteurs or legal experts from human rights organisations and Afghan women on how to engage with international mechanisms.

The session will also be used to:
- Create a small working group or network to maintain momentum. Participants could share documentation updates, advocacy opportunities, and legal strategies.
- Develop a guide on how to document human rights violations, engage with legal mechanisms, and lobby effectively (info taken from the training materials).
- ROLE UK and IBAHRI could contribute legal checklists, templates, and best practice guides.
- Plan a media or public outreach component, briefing UK journalists or a public webinar to help raise awareness of the findings from the sessions. Participants could be supported in writing op-eds or reports on gender apartheid in Afghanistan.
- Schedule online sessions to discuss progress, address follow-up questions and provide ongoing support.
